Hi! I have a strange problem with my usb keyboard. My Ubuntu 11.04 won`t boot up when it`s pluged in. Although it works perfectly on Windows. I suspect xorg to be the problem, but I`m not sure.

The trouble with '<>' is a known issue, XKB settings re-use mapping from old mac keyboards, which do not fit perfectly with newer Aluminium Keyboards.

I'm working on a solution for the 16 or 17 available layouts, stay tuned!

Thank you for this - it installed perfectly on debian 6.0.

I chose to remap the Fn-key to insert, but my third-level-key doesn't work as a Fn-replacement. dpkg-reconfigure it is :)

Also the key left to the &1-key (showing #@) returns '<>' - I'm not sure if it is supposed to be this way (running on an Azerty BE-layout).

Another thank you! I will spread the word and patiently wait for an adaptation to use for the wireless keyboard ;)

Here is the trouble: my XKB patches were accepted in xkeyboard-config 1.9. Ubuntu version is 1.8 + some patches including my support.

Problem is Ubuntu maintainers only picked 6 patches out of 7, so the support doesn't work right now (I'm running version 1.8-1ubuntu8).

I need to find out why the support has been partially integrated. More on that soon.

As for the Fn->Insert key, with Lucid Lynx you should have a fairly recent udev, so you could type:
/lib/udev/findkeyboards
to find your keyboard device name, then:
/lib/udev/keymap /dev/input/eventX 0xff0003 insert
with the relevant X, this should remap your key.

Tell me if it works, in any case I'll update the support very soon with udev support.

I have a question though - do I need to apply your patch even if I have the Apple Aluminium Keyboard (ISO) in the list of available keyboards already? (I'm on Lucid Lynx)

I tried to apply the fix for Fn key which supposed to turn it into the Insert key, but it disabled my mouse and external keyboard as well.

Hi Atha, you're right HAL support was really meant to be replaced at some point, as I explain in a more recent post.

In my latest .fdi file, the remapping is performed by a script called by HAL when it discovers the keyboard.

I should provide a udev rule to perform the equivalent remapping trick, should be a matter of days :)

I used your hack since the day I got my Alu keyboard.

Recently, since X.org server 1.9, HAL is no longer the default and has been dropped in favor of udev.

So far, I haven't found a way to make it work again.

Since you made it work the first time, maybe you are able to help to adapt your hack to work with udev instead of HAL.

It's been years since I coded this patch. In the mean time, Apple has open its SDK and I didn't have time to compile the patch against it yet.

I'm implementing in my spare time a full player for modules based on MikMod. Stay tuned :)

Hi, I followed your instructions and it worked fine. However, it didn't do the one thing I really wanted, fixing the media keys. I want to use the F buttons by holding down fn, and using the media keys by default (I turned off the insert mapping in the configuration file). But not all the media keys work -- well actually just two, but it's really annoying me: the expose and dashboard keys. I would really like to have these working so I can map the expose key to the compiz "scale". They should give something like XF86Expose and XF86Dashboard, like the other media keys. Right now they don't work at all in the compiz manager, and in the (gnome) keyboard shortcuts preferences, they give "0x80" and "0xd4" (but when I press the key after it doesn't do anything -- it does with the other media keys which have XF86___ names). If you have the time, and know how to do this, would you consider updating your patch with this functionality? Thanks.

Weird, the model used by xkb is "apple", while it should be "apple_aluiso".

Apparently, you tried to set it somewhere already, maybe from the FDI file, as there exist variable _XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP. What's strange is that gconftool does not contain any setting...

Can you try:
setxkbmap -model apple_aluiso -option "" -layout "us" -print

And see if the symbol apple_aluiso appears in the xkb_geometry tag? This will tell if the patch applies cleanly on your machine
